You’re likely already aware of what breast augmentation can do, as well as the typical stereotypes of the procedure that have been perpetuated due to popular representations in the media.
What makes an overdone breast augmentation vs. one that looks natural and leaves people wondering if you even had work done?
The key to getting the best results is partnering with the right surgeon. The best breast augmentation surgeons also know that educating their patients about the procedure produces the highest levels of patient satisfaction and the best end results. An informed patient is a prepared patient, and a prepared patient, more often than not, is a happy patient at the end of the process!
Below, we’ve created a simple breakdown of breast augmentation and what to expect with the actual procedure: implants, incisions, recovery, and how to get started.
Welcome to Breast Augmentation 101!
What are the Types of Breast Implants?
Breast implants are not a one-size-fits-all apparatus. Instead, there are numerous sizes and shapes of implants, all designed to fit you just right and give you the size and shape you’re after. The type of breast implant you choose depends on the volume, shape, profile, and fill.
How are Breast Implants Measured?
As stated above, you’ll have to work with your plastic surgeon to determine the correct dimensions of your breast implants.
- Volume: Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (cc), with bigger numbers meaning more volume (e.g., 100-250cc small, 275-400cc medium, 425+cc large).
- Shape: Usually, breast implants will come in two primary shapes: round and teardrop, also known as anatomical. Round implants can create a fuller look, especially in the upper pole. Anatomical implants are narrow at the top and wider at the bottom, and they also have a sloped shape to mimic a natural breast shape.
- Profile (Projection): In short, profile refers to how much the implant extends out from the chest. Implant profiles can be sorted into low, moderate, high, and extra high. Low and moderate projections are closer to the chest, whereas high and extra high protrude much further to create a fuller look.
- Fill: This aspect refers to the type of material that the implant will be filled with. There are two types of materials used: saline (saltwater) and silicone (cohesive gel). There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but in general, silicone implants will look and feel the most natural.
- Base Diameter: It’s essential to match the base diameter of the implant with that of your natural breast. This ensures that implants with more volume or projection will not create unnatural-looking gaps that spill into the armpit.
Remember, implants come in different widths and heights, and your surgeon can measure your body’s dimensions using our state-of-the-art sizers and other imaging tools.
Implant sizing tools include:
- Physical measurements
- Implant sizers
- 3D imaging
- Lifestyle factors
What Type of Incision Patterns Are Used in Breast Augmentation?
Choosing the proper incision pattern is crucial for several reasons. Most importantly, the spots where your incisions will be placed are also where you’ll have scars. While surgical procedures are far more advanced now than they’ve ever been, scarring is still a part of the deal if you have surgery.
Breast augmentation has a few incision patterns that may be used:
- Inframammary: An inframammary incision is carefully placed in the natural crease that’s beneath the breast. Surgeons often utilize this technique because of the control, direct access, and well-concealed location.
- Periareolar: This incision will be created along the bottom edge of the areola. This scar will blend in with the darker areolar color and is ideal for combining breast augmentation with a breast lift or related procedures.
- Transaxillary: Offering an approach that does not leave any scarring on the breasts, the transaxillary incision is made through the armpit. It’s made using an endoscope, and while it’s more challenging for the surgeon, it is an excellent method for those who want no visible scarring.
- Trans-umbilical: As perhaps the most uncommon incision method, trans-umbilical incisions are made through the belly button. Like the transaxillary method, it uses an endoscopic incision.
The type of incision you’ll use for your procedure will depend on your goals, the surgeon’s ability, and the safest and most logical approach. You will be able to discuss this with your surgeon during your consultation.
What Can I Expect During My Breast Augmentation Recovery?
Breast augmentation recovery is a gradual, step-by-step process, and knowing what to expect can make the experience far more comfortable and less stressful. While every patient heals at a slightly different pace, most recoveries follow a similar general timeline.
Immediately after surgery, you can expect swelling, tightness, and soreness in the chest. This is entirely normal, especially during the first few days as your body adjusts to the implants. You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions and prescribed medications as needed to help manage discomfort during this initial phase.
Most patients are able to return to light daily activities within a few days, though you should plan to take at least one week away from work and strenuous responsibilities. Swelling and firmness will gradually improve over several weeks as the implants settle into a more natural position. This process is often referred to as “dropping and fluffing.”
Physical activity should be reintroduced slowly. Your surgeon will encourage light walking early on to promote circulation, but they will want you to limit upper-body exercise, heavy lifting, and intense workouts for several weeks. Your surgeon will guide you through this process and let you know exactly when it’s safe to resume each activity.
Scars will continue to mature over time. While incision lines are permanent, they typically fade significantly over the course of several months with proper care. Your plastic surgeon takes a meticulous approach to incision placement and closure to promote optimal healing and discreet scarring.
Perhaps most importantly, follow-up care is an essential part of recovery. Your providers will closely monitor your healing progress to ensure your results are developing exactly as planned and to address any questions or concerns along the way.
