What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, colloquially referred to as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure designed to alter the shape, size, or proportions of the nose to correct and address aesthetic concerns. The nose is one of the most prominent facial features, meaning that any perceived imperfection can have a substantial impact on facial harmony and balance. Fortunately, rhinoplasty can—often with small changes—make a big impact on your overall facial profile.
Often, people seeking rhinoplasty for cosmetic concerns are bothered by things like:
- Bumps
- Crooked noses
- Upturned or downturned nasal tips
- Noses that are too wide or too narrow
- Nostrils that are too small or large
People seeking rhinoplasty for medical reasons are often looking to correct:
- Damage from facial trauma
- Narrowing of the nostrils
- Genetic deformities
- Deviated septum
- Cleft lip and cleft palate
Whatever your reason for seeking nasal surgery, Dr. Brantley and the team at BOA will tailor a treatment plan to meet your functional and aesthetic needs with care and compassion.
Is Rhinoplasty for Everyone?
In general, anyone who wants to refine their nasal appearance or restore proper airway function may benefit from rhinoplasty, often combined with septoplasty and turbinate reduction. That said, both ethnic rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty are unique subtypes of rhinoplasty surgeries that are tailored to the individual patient.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is specifically designed for individuals who are not of Western European descent. Many patients of Hispanic, Indian, Indigenous, African, and Asian backgrounds seek nasal refinement, and Dr. Brantley takes great care to provide the desired correction while preserving the integrity of each patient’s unique cultural features and standards of beauty.
For patients who have undergone rhinoplasty in the past but still require further correction—or are experiencing complications from their initial surgery—revision rhinoplasty may be the next step. This is a more complex procedure, as Dr. Brantley must work around scar tissue and often limited or compromised cartilage.

Dr. Brantley also understands that physical concerns can affect emotional and mental well-being. That’s why he takes considerable time with each patient to ensure you feel heard, supported, and confident—both during your consultation and throughout your aesthetic surgery journey.
During your rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Brantley will review and discuss:
- Relevant medical history notes, including previous surgeries or treatments related to your nasal passages and airways.
- Your ideal result and photo references.
- Your expectations and goals for rhinoplasty surgery.
- Your medical and surgical history.
Where Are Rhinoplasty Incisions Made?
There are two incision placement options available to patients, depending on their needs. An open rhinoplasty is for patients for whom Dr. Brantley needs greater access to the internal structures to achieve the desired contouring and repair. During this procedure, he will make incisions in the nostrils and on the columella, or the strip of skin between the nostrils. A closed rhinoplasty involves incisions only inside the nostrils and is reserved for patients whose concerns are less complex.
Am I an Ideal Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Candidates for rhinoplasty are those who are healthy and want to change the shape, size, proportions, and function of their nose.
Ideal candidates interested in a rhinoplasty should:
- Be in good overall health.
- Have completed their facial growth, generally over the age of 13.
- Be a non-smoker or willing to quit all nicotine at least 2 weeks before and after surgery.
- Have no medical conditions that may impair healing or affect general anesthesia.
- Have a positive outlook and realistic goals for their rhinoplasty procedure.
- Understand the surgical risks and benefits.
How Should I Prepare for My Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Before your rhinoplasty procedure, it’s important to be in good overall health to ensure beautiful results and a smooth recovery. Here are some tips to help you prepare for surgery.
- Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Continue your consistent exercise routine and follow a balanced diet rich in protein to support healing and overall wellness.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to and following your procedure to support recovery and overall wellness.
- Medical Clearance: If required, schedule a visit with your primary care physician for a pre-surgical evaluation to ensure you are physically fit for surgery. Testing may include routine blood tests or an EKG. We will discuss this during your consultation.
- Medication & Supplement Restrictions: Dr. Brantley will review your medications, supplements, or vitamins during your consultation. You may need to stop taking anything that increases the risk of bleeding or bruising for two weeks before and after surgery, including fish oil, garlic, ginseng, vitamin E, Ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications.
- Discontinue Nicotine Use: If you smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you must stop at least 2 weeks before and after surgery. Nicotine negatively impacts healing and increases surgical risks.
- Prepare Your Home for Recovery: This can include ensuring you have ample time off work, completing household chores, setting up a comfortable recovery space, preparing and freezing healthy meals, arranging for a meal delivery service, or filling prescriptions and purchasing supplies.
- Arrange for Help: Plan on having a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours following surgery. For the first few days, you may also need help with childcare, pet care, or household tasks.
What Should I Expect from My Flowood, MS, Rhinoplasty Procedure?
On the night before your rhinoplasty surgery, avoid eating or drinking after midnight; however, take approved medications with small sips of water. Come to surgery freshly showered with Hibiclens, without makeup, lotions, or deodorants. Leave jewelry or contact lenses at home, and wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to take off and put on after your procedure. Depending on the characteristics of your individual treatment plan, rhinoplasty can take between 1 and 4 hours.
Pre-Op Review
Before your procedure, carefully review your paperwork to confirm your surgery location and arrival time. At check-in, you may be asked to provide identification and emergency contact information.
Anesthesia Consultation
On the day of your rhinoplasty surgery, you’ll meet with Dr. Brantley and your anesthesia provider to review your surgical plan and address any final questions or concerns. If necessary, an anesthesia consultation will be arranged before your surgery.
Incision and Tissue Work
Based on the surgical plan developed during your consultation, Dr. Brantley will make small, discreet incisions inside the nostrils and the columella, if necessary. From there, he will reshape the nasal structure by removing or adding bone and cartilage, straighten and repair the structures within the nose, and reshape the tissues as determined by your treatment plan.
Sutures and Dressing
Dr. Brantley will close your incisions with sutures and cover them with a surgical dressing, which will remain in place until your first shower. You will be fitted with a nasal splint to support your nose’s new shape during healing. If necessary, a splint may also be placed inside the nose to stabilize the septum.
What Should I Expect from My Rhinoplasty Recovery?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you should arrange for someone to drive you home afterward. You may also need assistance with daily tasks, including childcare and pet care, during the first few days.
During rhinoplasty recovery, patients can expect swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, which typically peak within the first few days and gradually subside over the following weeks. Some discomfort is common and can be managed with prescribed pain medications, muscle relaxants, and over-the-counter options. To protect your results and support healing, keep your head elevated during the initial recovery period.
A splint may be placed on the nose to support its new shape, and nasal packing or internal splints may be used inside the nostrils to stabilize the septum. These are usually removed within a week.
Many patients take 7 to 10 days off from work and social activities to recover. It is crucial to avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks or until cleared by Dr. Brantley.
How Soon Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results, And How Long Will My Results Last?
Your rhinoplasty results will become visible as swelling and bruising begin to subside, typically within a few weeks. After about three months, you will notice significant improvements in both the appearance and function of your nose. Between 12 and 18 months, all residual swelling should have resolved, revealing your final result. Rhinoplasty results are considered permanent because the internal structure of the nose is altered.

Jackson Rhinoplasty FAQs
How should I prepare for my rhinoplasty consultation?
You don’t need to do anything specific to prepare for your rhinoplasty consultation. During your visit, Dr. Brantley will review your health and medical history, discuss any previous treatments related to structural concerns of the nasal passages, and have an open conversation to understand your goals. He will then work with you to determine if rhinoplasty is the right option and will thoroughly explain the procedure, its risks and benefits, and what you can expect during recovery.
What Can Rhinoplasty Correct?
Rhinoplasty can correct both cosmetic and functional concerns with your nasal appearance and the function of your airways.
- Reshaping the nose to improve its appearance.
- Reducing or increasing the size of the nose.
- Correcting the shape of the nasal tip or bridge.
- Narrowing the nostrils.
- Addressing congenital defects or deformities.
Are there nonsurgical rhinoplasty options?
Yes. Nonsurgical rhinoplasty with dermal fillers is a great option for people who are not yet ready to commit to rhinoplasty surgery or want to make minor tweaks to their appearance or surgical result.
What is the difference between an open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty?
The difference between an open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty lies in the location of the incisions and the amount of access the surgeon needs to the internal structures of your nose. Dr. Brantley will determine the technique best suited to your anatomy and goals. For more subtle changes, a closed rhinoplasty—where incisions are made only inside the nostrils—is often sufficient. For more complex cases or those requiring significant structural modifications, an open rhinoplasty is the preferred method.
Does insurance cover rhinoplasty?
Depending on the reason for your rhinoplasty, it is possible that your insurance provider may cover some of your procedure. Our team can help you navigate this process and ensure you get the care you need at a price you can afford.
How do I choose a rhinoplasty surgeon?
Selecting a rhinoplasty surgeon is a personal and important decision. Your surgeon should not only understand your aesthetic goals but also prioritize your safety and consistently deliver excellent results. During your consultation, ask to view before-and-after photos to get a sense of the outcomes they typically achieve. Because rhinoplasty is a technically demanding procedure, it’s important to choose a surgeon who performs it regularly.
Another essential factor is feeling comfortable and confident with your surgeon. Look for someone who is transparent about potential risks and complications, holds hospital admitting privileges, and is open to discussing how they would manage any issues that may arise.
Any plastic surgery procedure is a significant investment in yourself, and your surgeon should take every step to ensure the best possible outcome. This includes identifying any factors that could impact your safety or results and developing a personalized plan before scheduling your surgery.
During your consultation, Dr. Brantley will make sure you feel comfortable, discuss your desired outcome, and explain how your safety will be prioritized—before, during, and after your procedure.
